What to do? Compromise! or find a place downstream from the pump FWF. Crud in fuel can cause engine stoppage at worst and plugged injectors if it gets by a gascolator at best. The Fram HPG1 with its replaceable paper element (looks like a little oil filter) has only one downside I can see and that's weight. The concern about fuel in the cockpit during service is minimal since you would drain the bowl of all but an oz or so thru the sump drain and put two old towels under everything to catch any dribbles. The heaviest part of the Fram is the Steel Bowl. If enough of us end up using this filter, someone could duplicate the bowl in aluminum on cnc equipment. When I was just a simple yacht merchant, the first thing we installed on a new boat was a large capacity diesel fuel filter, solved a lot of service headaches.
