Having just participated in this summers Critical Item List reviews for the
Space Shuttle Main Propulsion System I took out the Flap Electrical
schematics and applied the same rational we used this summer. The Limit
Switches, Flap Switch, Wiring and Relays (both Contacts and Coil) are all
single point failures which could lead some not-so-fun consequences (landing
with Flaps at 8deg reflex / go-around climbout with full flaps).
I plan on installing an override system using 2 pushbutton switches on a
separate breaker wired to move the flaps up/down if the primary system
fails. Normally the breaker will be open (I'll check the system in
preflight) and only used if needed. Seems like a small weight/complexity
penality if you ever really needed it.
