Had an interesting occurrence today.  Did my normal preflight on my Super ES,
started it, got ready to taxi and the flaps would not retract.  Tried both
flap switches and reset the circuit breaker.  No movement.  No sound from the
flap motor.

Disassembled the rear seat to get to the motor.  Still no reaction when
buttons and switches were worked.  Checked all connections, pushed on all the
connectors, removed the attaching pin and worked the motor in all its axis.
No luck.  Removed the cover for the limit switch, checked and worked each
connection.  Next time I pushed the operating switch, the motor ran fine.
Ran it to each of its limits about twelve times with no problem.  Hooked it
back up to the flaps and extended and retracted them about half a dozen
times.  No problem.  No problem with partial extension and partial retraction.

Only condition I can think of that was different from normal was the
temperature.  This was the coldest condition the plane has been in.  Temp was
about 35F.  Don't know if that could have an affect.  Have no other ideas
except possible loose connection.

I am concerned that whatever the problem was has not been solved.  The
inability to retract flaps could make a missed approach interesting.  I've
never tried to climb with full flaps but I don't really think it would work
very well.

I am not reassembling or flying the plane till I feel I know what caused it
and am reasonably sure it won't happen again.  My plan is to contact Lancair
for advice.  I would really appreciate any input from the mail list
participants.

Thanks in advance for your help.
