Help! Having made the (possibly insane) decision to do my own painting
this time, I have finally arrived at the point of "color sanding" my topcoat
(Poly-Fiber Top Gloss, cured over a month). I want to have the HStab
underside, particularly, finished before I bond it in place; that way I
won't have to do it all upside down.
The wet sanding seemed to go well. I went from 600 to 1000, then 1500,
and, finally, 2000 grit, and came up with an almost-gloss surface. I then
tried Finesse-It II (3M) with a new wool buffing pad on a (heavy) buffer.
Maybe I don't get it, but I have not been able to get a nice, glossy
surface. I guess I expected it to act something like liquid wax, but it
doesn't. I don't know if I'm using too much, too little, have the buffer
going too fast or too slow, whether I'm buffing too long or not long enough,
...... ??? The surface seems to stay cloudy, and has lots of marks from the
buffing pad. The more I try to buff those out, the more I get. Grrrhh.
So, if anyone out there wouldn't mind being bombarded with dumb
questions, could you e-mail me with a 'phone number and a good time of day
to call? I'd like to just call someone who knows what they're doing and see
if I can figure out what I'm missing here.
