If you ever looked at the gunk that comes out of the return line on an
air-oil separator, you'd NEVER consider returning it to your engine (unless
you had an incipient death-wish for your engine). Just feed the return line
into a small container - a polyethelene bottle will do - and empty it as
required. One look at the stuff that collects in the container will convince
almost anybody that it shouldn't go back in the sump!!! My guess is that
what you collect is all the most undesireable fractions driven off by the
engine heat.
On my O-235, I have installed about a 4 - 5 oz. goo-collector, which needs
dumping at about each oil change. It makes no sense to fill your crankcase
with a load of $2.35 per quart oil every 30 to 50 hours and then dump the
stuff that your separator collects in on top of it. I've never had an
analysis done of the stuff but it looks truly nasty!
Of course, as always, my motto remains: "You pays your money and you takes
your chances". Run it back into your engine if it makes you truly happy!
