If there is a suction from the engine or enough positive pressure in the air/oil separator it could be mounted lower. I don't have room on the firewall to mount it high enough so as to be above the return to the engine. I used the Lancair drawing to lay out all the firewall penetrations. As a point of information, anyone desiring to install an Airwolf Remote Oil Filter, do install the adapter on the engine before installing the engine on the firewall. I had to cut 3/16" off the vertical stud that the oil filter screws on in order for the adapter to bottom and seal. The installation instructions from Airwolf cover this operation, just grind the stud to the proper length. This isn't easy with the engine mounted without removing the oil filter adapter from the engine. Not much room to work.
