Brent:
I have to take issue with this posting.... I have been flying in spam cans
with Mogas specials for quite a while and I have not had any problems. Of
course, I have not had an engine overhauled yet, but I have one coming up on
TBO and will keep you informed as to the engine condition at overhaul.
Additionally, another posting said that Mogas gives the illusion of "false
economy", I am saving hundreds of dollars per hundred hours of service.
Hmmmmm..... I feel better now :)
Brent, empirically you are correct about composition of mogas (I did
chemistry in undergrad with a focus on analytical). However, I think I am
either flying blind, stupid, or both in believing (based on my personal
experience) that Mogas is a suitable substitute to Avgas. It works for me.
Another question to ask, what is the composition of Avgas? Is it fractioned
and distilled to the point that it has such a narrow range of hydrocarbons
as to be declared so far superior to mogas? Does that account for it's
outrageous cost? (of course not **wink**)
I temper all of my thoughts by saying that 1) I don't fly my spam cans at
FL250 and 2) the powerplants to which I refer are not 250HP+ powerplants,
fire breathing, turbo-yada-yada-yada.
I respect Brent, his (and others) outstanding intellect and
active/intelligent contribution to the list, but don't dismiss Mogas so
quickly when there are many folks out there running the stuff. Perhaps, not
in high-altitude applications.
Respectfully,
Marc Verdi
