Due to my weight problem, I searched the archives for information on increasing the gross weight of my 360. I'd like to revisit the topic to see whether I can fly beyond the pattern with any my 175 pound friends! Here is what I have concluded from reading the archives. Please correct me if I mistate anything, and warn me if I am headed down a dangerous path... For starters, I will state the obvious: I built a pig, and I am trying desperately to find more generous (but still safe) limits to make it a two-place plane. I don't have a CG problem, so I will avoid that discussion... 1. Lancair's recommended gross is currently 1765 with a landing gross of 1665 2. A homebuilder ultimately determines the gross weight of the airplane 3. Some builders have opined that Ong debongers may improve the durability of the undercarriage (also mentioned in a Lancair SB about bent gear legs) 4. The higher the gross, the less "g's" the airframe can handle (note: I have NO intention of doing aerobatic type flight) 5. There are some builders who discussed using gross weights in the mid-1800 pound range, and at least one who mentioned 2000 pounds. I do want to increase the gross weight of the plane and gross landing weight. I am thinking about 1900 and 1800, respectively (it allows a decent range). I know this is backwards thinking - I shouldn't be increasing gross weights because of my build weight - but I am. How would such a change impact the plane? Should I change (mentally or documented) any limitations? Won't this be better from an insurance and FAA standpoint (i.e.. if I were to crash over gross, couldn't my insurance or license be impacted vs. being under gross with new limits?). Any and all thoughts will be appreciated.
