When you squeeze parts together with liquid gasket material, some of the excess material goes out (where it can be wiped off), and some of it goes inside (where it can't be wiped off). If this material breaks loose and finds its way to an oil passage, you will end up with "less than optimum" lubrication. Assuming you have a Continental engine, look for Continental SIL99-2B, http://www.tcmlink.com/pdf2/SIL99-2B.pdf. This specifies the various sealants and lubricants recommended for Continental engines. If some other manufacturer, they will have an equivalent document. You can also call their support line and ask them. Permatex Aviation form-a-gasket was used originally as the sealant. Anybody got a better solution?
