I am the new owner (18 months) of Walt Bills IV-P N411WB. The engine is the
TSIO-550 B1E with recent top overhaul and new turbochargers. It has a single
electronic ignition and runs perfectly lean-of-peak with its Gami injectors
(30 inches @ 2500 rpm 16.5 gph).
My problem is getting to altitude. The fuel system is set according to the
book at takeoff and I climb full rich 32" @ 2500 rpm, 30 gph (VM1000). Low
boast is on passing through 10,000. I can climb at 140 - 160 knots IAS with
the climb rate 1500 - 1000 fpm respectively. The TIT stays around 1400 with
the EGTs around 1350. The fuel pressure in the 30-35 range and the fuel flow
sits on 30 gph. At around 17,000 msl (density about 18500) I start to notice
a decided increase in the TIT and EGTs with a decreasing fuel flow down to
about 28.5 gph ( the fuel pressure seems unchanged. The rapid rising
temperatures force me to level off around FL 190; later on I can make a
brief climb to FL 210 or so. The problem seems to be related to the fuel
flow decreasing around 17,000.
What is the experience of other IV-P drivers. Can you climb continuously up
to FL 240 on warm days and what kind of temperatures do you experience?
Could I have a small air leak in the upper deck leading to the fuel pump -
making it think that the MAP is falling off? Any suggestions are appreciated
and comments welcome.
