Stu;
I'm building an ES and dealing with the same problem. In talking to Mark at
Lancair, he suggested using heat to straighten the trailing edges of the
vert stab skin which were curled in causing the pocket for the rudder
leading edge to be too narrow by as much as 3/8". Using heat did not work,
so I was left with having to build up the outside skin edges with BID and
micro and then sanding away the inside to get the proper width. I also
sanded down the spar and ribs of the rudder to make it a little narrower to
get the proper fit. Needless to say, this was a big job. To compound the
problem, the shape of the rudder skins was not consistant with the shape of
the vert stab rear pocket. I'm still not finished with the job as I have
yet to close out the rudder, but the fit is looking much better. I was not
able to abtain the 0.05" space between vert stab skin and rudder as called
for in the instr. book. Mine is more like 0.08-0.10 inch. Anyway, I hope
this helps and good luck with yours.
