<<Brent, did you read in Sport Aviation last month, or maybe it was
this month, in the Letters section, the letter discussing the fact
that Avgas actually weighs more than 6 lb/gal? The letter is fairly
detailed, and comes to the conclusion that it weighs 6.2 lb/gal (I
think it was 6.2 ). Who's right?>>

Need you ask?? ;)

Well, I started with a scale that had a 0.02 pound resolution and a 0.04
pound accuracy, a platform scale with unknown calibration (local EAA scale
for weighing planes), two 1000 ml beakers, a 4000 ml beaker, two one gallon
cans, a 5 gallon can and a 55 gallon drum. I measured the tare of the three
cans and the drum and filled the three cans and the drum with 100LL from the
FBO as accurately as I could using the pump volume gages. I weighed
everything one at a time, subtracted the tare and divided by the gallons to
get the weight per gallon. I then confirmed the volume of a pumped gallon
using a series of measurements with the beakers. Measurements ranged from
5.76 to 5.82 pounds per gallon and were taken at 75 F.

Subsequent fill ups at various FBOs have confirmed the accuracy of my gages.

The logical conclusion is that the density of avgas can vary. The moral is
that if you use weight to measure fuel volume when calibrating your tanks,
you better establish the weight per gallon of the fuel you are using.

Don't believe anything you read. Not even this.

Brent Regan
