With all of the talk lately regarding stuck trim tabs, this appeared in our
local paper on 26 Sept 00 page A11.  The paper was the Tribune-Review in
Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (near Pittsburgh).  The entire article is
below.  For those who are interested Arnold Palmer Regional Airport used to
be called Latrobe Airport or Westmoreland County Airport (LBE).

Experimental plane forced to land
by The Tribune-Review

An experimental plane made a safe but unscheduled landing at Arnold Palmer
Regional Airport in Unity Township on Monday after a minor mechanical
problem.

Airport Manager Gabe Monzo said the pilot of a Lancair 360, which departed
from Brookville, Fla., and was bound for Franklin, Venango County, radioed
the Westmoreland County airport's air-traffic control tower shortly before
2:21p.m.

The kit-built, single-engine aircraft was experiencing instrumentation
problems, Monzo said, "The plane's trim switch was sticking and it was
loosing altitude."

Airport fire Chief Moe Haas identified the two occupants of the plane as
Pete Ayer and Gene Johannasmeyer.  Neither was injured, and there was no
damage to the aircraft, Haas said.

Airport rescue and Mutual Aid Ambulance Service personnel were put on Alert
1 status for the landing "as a precautionary measure," said Monzo, adding
such a step is standard protocol for an aircraft experiencing minor
difficulty.

-------------------------------------------------
Congratulations to Pete and Gene for getting the plane back safely on the
ground without injury or incident.  It appears that the suggestion of a
separate power switch for trim tab power is a good one.
