Vacuum pumps fail.
I know this from reading about them here on the list. Although my experience
with them may not be sufficient to draw any meaningful conclusion, maybe
I'm just lucky, here's my story. In about 6,000 hours as a CFI and many
years as a flight school owner, I've never had a pump failure in an airplane
I was flying or in one of my school's airplanes. All of these were typical
trainers, tied down outside and beat up bad. I have, however, had a lot of
alternator failures. Too small a sampling to be statistically meaningful but
I went with a pump instead of all electric. I did put in the Precise Flight
standby vacuum system as well as two batteries and two separate busses.
Don't know if this helps but I just thought that I'd pass along what my
experience with vacuum pumps has been.
