I did some research on this a while back.  Most unmodified struts suggest Fork oil SAE30 weight.   Here is a website that talks about the viscosities and agents in fork versus motor oil and pretty much says go with a hydraulic oil to save a few dollars versus branded "fork" oils.  Lots of other summaries of fork oil viscosities are available with a search.

Further, I have a set of Ong's pucks that replace the valves in the Legacy strut but not yet installed.  Ong says with the old struts use SAE30 fork oil, the new pucks can use 5606 fluid so they must have a modified flow system.

Hydraulic Fluid for Legacy RG Oleos
Hi

Does anyone know what kind of oil is required for the oleos of a Legacy RG? I need to top up my right leg.

Thanks
