Thanks for the response. I would like to do as you have done, and incorporate both types of springs as a backup, because the consequences of failure are at their least expensive, and at their worst, a serious danger to my health!! However, I am not an engineer, so I don’t know how to specify what coil extension springs I need.
Isn’t home building interesting?!

I can't offer advice on your gear, as I don't have the outback setup.
I had the exact same issue as you. The gear would extend but the spring would be on the wrong side.
Below is a photo (Also Attached) of the old "bad" spring next to the replacement from Lancair. Would be interesting to see if your replacement is equally different.
