I don't think adsb is required to identify us.  Mode S already identifies us with a unique identifier I believe.  I actually had a controller say "hello, Mr Heizer" to me ~two years ago when I called up Seattle center in the air.  Not sure how he did that, I presumed it was the Mode S transponder in my plane.
