There's a wonderful book describing how Target embraced the data gathering of its customers to then mail specific flyers with items it projected you would want.  The company was able to predict pregnancies and even due dates based on shopping patterns.   It went off the tracks when some people started complaining about the ads in their flyers and it was revealed Target knew more than the family members in that household.  We have been tracked for years.  You would have to work very hard not to be seen and recorded in flight or on the ground today.
