Be careful. When they dug new fiber optic cable and failed to compact, we had a sx300 sink in and prop strike. Shut down and push if you see a issue. Even on Papa, just be quick abt it. Parking missed that spot and should have coned it off. I'll be looking in the future.

I’ve been corresponding with Jeannie Schneider who directs the aircraft parking on the main homebuilt show line at AirVenture (along taxiway P)

 

She’ll do her best to park the Lancairs together in the same area as we’ve parked in past years. Specifically, she’ll hold some space for 40-50 aircraft in the area to the north of the Homebuilt Headquarters building and south of paved cross-taxiway P1. This will be available on a first-come basis, and when it fills up, folks will be directed elsewhere, but we’ve been able to accommodate almost everyone in past years, and expect to do the same this year.

 

If you are flying in to the area during AirVenture, be sure to read ahead, and bring along a copy of the AirVenture NOTAM. This is IMPORTANT, and an FAA requirement besides. Also, I can recommend the “Warbird Arrival” over the “standard” Fisk arrival. Our pattern speeds are much more compatible with the warbirds, but the users of this arrival are pros, and expect everyone to be following the airspeeds/altitudes/procedures--exactly. Not an area to wander around looking for the airfield--for several reasons. IFR arrival is another option. You’ll be given landing priority, but it requires a reservation/slot time, and the time window to obtain a slot is rather limited.

 

After landing and clearing the active runways, put up the window sign for Homebuilt Parking (HBP) and you SHOULD be directed to taxiway P. Once you get on taxiway P, a “LANCAIR” sign will help them direct you to our parking area just a bit north of the control tower. If this is not working for you, shut down and talk to the ramp coordinators. They have radios to Jeannie, who can get you moving in the right direction. Patience, courtesy and caution are the magic words!

 

A couple of alerts: If there is any question about the unpaved taxi surface, pull off the active taxiway (P) and shut down. (Please don’t block the taxiway…even for a few minutes!) I recommend carrying a couple of strong pieces of rope in the airplane. One tied around each gear leg and attached to about six scouts will move any Lancair anywhere you want it to go! Be sure to leave the hydraulic system pressurized to help keep the gear extended during such ground maneuvering.
