Tom

i regularly fly to Key West; four trips in the last eight months. Since i have the 4P i am making the trip more often.

now that i fly a single i go down the west coast of Florida.

my route from Teterboro is:

TEB PXT SSI HST MNATE KEYW

this keeps me over land or within gliding distance of land. (and clear of the seat of government)

SUMMER TIME

Ideally you want to be on the ground for the day by 2:00PM, even better 1:00PM. there will be buildups almost every afternoon.
we had one trip where we started late and there was a storm system that covered the whole width of Florida. We would have had to gone to Pensacola and traveled out over the gulf to get around the system; and then there was no guarantee. we stopped short and finished the trip in the morning

the least expensive fuel i have found on the East Coast is at Flagler Airport.

when we flew the Cessna 340 we would go down the West Coast and get fuel in Wachula. the stop saved $450.00 over going nonstop and paying KEYW fuel prices. not a bad waste of an hour.

glad to give any more help if you need it.

as a footnote: with a slight tailwind i can make KTEB-KEYW in 4:10 with over an hour reserve fuel

I have been studying the weather patterns over the past few days in vicinity of the keys and the gulf. It seems it is always raining or about to with CBs being almost a permanent fixture over the causeway along with lightening even in the early morning
