I have no experience with any of the
experimental engine shops; I have a standard Lycoming that was overhauled
with Lycoming parts.
I will, although, strongly advocate that you get a
parallel valve engine, as it will fit (tight!) under the cowling without large
modifications.
The angle valve engines will get you more HP, but
at a fairly high cost. The engine is heavier and does not in any way fit the
cowlings, so you will have to change these radically with bulges here and there.
I have yet to see a pretty angle valve cowling and I think that is a shame on an
otherwise beautiful airframe.
My engine is an O-360-A1A with updraft sump,
Ellison Throttle Body and Chris Zavatsons cowling, plenum and air filter
box. It is a nice, clean and recommendable installation. If you want the extra
20 HP, a nice port & polish job will get you close without the
penalties.
