Guys,
It's absurd to even try comparing a tiny single seat or equally tiny two
seat (Polen or Venture) to the IV-P, regardless of engine. The fact that
IV's even compete (and have almost exclusively won) is one hell of a
statement for the IV's. Jim Rahm's performance spec. should not be confused
with a race result speed, anyone should know better than that. Performance
spec. is high altitude cruise, a race spec is just that; standing start,
lower altitudes with two climbs included since racers had to pass one
airport at 500 ft. midway through the course. Such a race heavily favors a
Venture and heavily penalizes a IV, yet they won! Also on Jim's behalf, he
did get rather flustered and blew his race plan. Seems that since he was
the first racer to enter Chicago airspace area, the controller attempted to
bust him for exceeding the 250 kt airspeed restriction below 10,000 ft. - he
was doing 330 kts in the descent! Congratulations to all racers - but
especially to Orin and Jim for first and second! BTW: Lee Beal commented
to me after the race saying, "hey Lance, I'm real tired of lookin' at the
ass end of a Lancair IV in all these races"! His ten year old son, whw flew
copilot then said, "yea dad, let's get a IV"! Lee agreed so we're working
on him. Lee, you NEED one!
Lance
