I've flown the length of Superior many times as well as Erie and Ontario w/out the use of floatation equipment. However that was in a Conquest, I'm not sure how I'd feel about doing it in a single regardless of what the rules or the calculated numbers say. For a simple crossing [say E/W across Michigian] I'd prob be ok but much more than that and I'd most likely just plan around it [take a different route].
