Like Bob Jude, I'm having trouble 'restraining' myself after reading
about the two batteries in parallel and the diodes being used to isolate
them. As an old electronic tech and a student of Bob Nuckols, I think we
should forget about the diode idea in favor of an accurate low voltage
indicator and then use a simple switch to separate the two batteries.
The low voltage is set to indicate when the alternator drops off line
which is the only time we need the batteries while in cruise. Of course,
we should use the same type battery in each case requiring the same
charging voltage. If this approach is of interest, check
http://www.aeroelectric.com/articles.html where you will find complete
descriptions and wiring diagrams supplied by Bob Nuckols. Equally
important in this discussion is using a battery testing device which is
also described at this site. A battery with little capacity left is
just a hunk of lead we carry along needlessly.
This all fits into the discussion of 'all electric' vs vacuum/electric we
struggle with financially.. or at least I do. Earl
