Yet another, more power efficient technique would be to use a DC to DC converter
to take isolated, ala a diode, DC to the correct charging voltage. Charge
current for a standby battery is low so charge circuit power dissipation
shouldn't be much of a problem with this approach. In the rare occurrence where
one might want to blast a charge into the standby battery, the isolation stuff
could be shunted allowing full alternator juice access to the battery.
