I too have gone the "total electric route" with dual busses, dual batteries,
dual alternators, and dual warning systems. Having had vacuum pumps
fail before, with little or no warning, I felt it much safer to power all
the instruments electrically.

However, as Bob points out in the original mail, it is very important to
provide some type of warning system that detects when a battery is
being discharged. A battery in discharge means something is wrong with the
system. The condition is easily detectable and directly lends itself to
a warning light. See www.aerolectric.com for Bob's warning system.

Cheap insurance against an electrical failure is either a backup buss
(Bob refers to it as an essential bus) or dual batteries. I chose the
dual battery route (two 17ah RGs) and crossfeed the busses for starting or
system failure.

No vacuum, no m'am

[I think Bobs %-load/voltmeter is an excellent device which addresses this
issue directly.  It's kind of expensive for a simple dual gauge, but
seems well worth the investment considering the info it can provide.  I've
planned one into my panel already, and I'm nowhere near that point in my
project.
