Ronald and other LML subsribers,
Although you can purchase operating airplanes for cheaper then you could buy the parts.
There are projects out there with engines, props, and even avionics that people are willing
to sell for very cheap.
For example I know of a Lancair Legacy that is 80% complete. It has a certified rebuild
continental IO-550. A brand new scimitar Hartzell prop. Sorcerer auto pilot and Garmin G900
avionics equipment. The owner is willing to take $125-150K. The retail value of these parts
is easily $250-300K.
One could easily pay a quality builder like myself to finish the build, paint, avionics, and
interior for a very reasonable amount. One could finish this project for $75-100K and have a
brand new turn key airplane. For a price equal to what you could buy a flying plane for, but
it sure seems like you get a lot more!
