I have a habit of doing an in-flight, high power mag check just before let-down on almost every flight.  It is the best way to find weak plugs and ignition issues long before they would surface on a run-up mag test.  iI have a bushel basket of plugs that fail the inflight test but will pass a run-up mag check or a mechanic's bomb test.  This finds weak plugs as much as 35-40 hours before they would fail and be a flight-stopper.  It also lets you deal with the problem at home, at your leisure instead of somewhere else.

Is an in-flight magneto check generally recommended?

470 hours SNEW on mags and plugs.  I did get #5 & #1 going offscale last trip but that is normally corrected by tightening the connectors on that side of the engine.  The EGT wires use a friction connector.  So, the inflight mag check is the best initial diagnostic?  Thanks for the idea,
