A week or so ago, the left side brake assembly suddenly had a new sound coming from it that was different from the clanking and rattling sounds I and you have grown to love. And upon closer inspection, the brake pads were CHATTERING and catching the brake disk during 25% of the rotation. It just didn't sound right. Well anyway, I disassembled the brake assemble last Saturday and also mentioned the problem to several other pilots on the field. It turns out that my friend Rich had the same problem with his Aerostar and gave be a lubricant to use on the cylindrical sliders (don't recall the lubricant type/name but will post it as soon as I look it up). In addition, the shorter cylindrical sliders had scuff marks on it. I carefully sanded the sliders with 1,500 grit sand paper and then used metal polish to buff them. This removed all the scuff marks and it felt really smooth after this procedure. I then reassembled the thing back together and then put a dab of the lubricant on the sliders, carefully making sure that none of the lubricant comes into contact with the pads. Walla! Chattering is gone, only the good old rattle/clanking is present. Rich mentioned that he puts lubricant on the sliders ever time he replaces his brake pads, I will do the same from now on... << I replace the pads, as you have done, upon the first indication of uneven wear which usually occurs with lots of pad left. The last set of pads (Cleveland) seem to be wearing much better.>> Yes, the Clevelands are much better (my original Matco pads, as you may recall, all cracked and chipped after a only a few hours and landings). And yes, I don't skimp on the brake pad replacement also. It is easy and cheap enough to replace. Good insurance for such a critical component of this aircraft... See you at OSH...
