Shock Cooling & other matters of engine health are covered in the Lycoming
Pub, "Key Reprints"
available from the factory at 652Oliver St, Williamsport, PA 17701 or
717/327-7278 or FAX 717/723-7022.  It's 99 pages of good official info. I'm
sure Continental has something similiar. It is far more informative on the
whole picture, but my opinion is to never make any quick or radical changes
in anything engine related.  I get to 40 mph before adding full power,
slowly to 25 square on climb out, ease over to cruise and decend at 100 fpm,
when ever possible. Oregon Controllers are by and large helpful in
accomodating"cruise descents" -----
