Re: InFO 09015: Benefits of AOA Instrument in Lancairs

The FAA's recommendation for a AOA and impending stall warning is prudent (in addition to their other suggestions).  I have a Chelton system that provides aural and visual stall warning based on calculated airspeed, trajectory, and G loading (calculation), tied to programmed stall speeds (derived from real stall experience).

There was a brief ListServ discussion several years ago about the accuracy of the Chelton to depict and warn regarding impending stall (again, based on calculation) and how this might compare to the AOA indicator sampling real aerodynamic pressures.  There were not enough dual installations to provide any experiencial reports.  I have seen my Chelton accurately warn of impending stall in straight flight (1G), correlated with actual stall, and have seen warnings under G loading that have modified my bank angle and warned me to unload the wings.

Does anyone have the Chelton system AND one of the AOA insturments installed, and has operational experience comparing the Chelton's depiction of impending stall with the AOA's sequential indication of impending stall?  Specifically in both straight flight and under G loading?

This from Ted Stanley and the FAA.  I find it interesting that they finally recommend the installation of an AOA instrument, something we've been preaching since the early days of the Lancair Network News, right up through the present.  Even more ironic is the fact that Jim Frantz worked for years at getting his simpler but very capable AOA Sport certified and the FAA managed to throw roadblock after roadblock in his path, and, to the best of my knowledge, he (or the new owner of that business) still hasn't managed to get it certified.  In the meantime the FAA is allowing night-time aerobatic displays with fireworks coming out of the wings..... aii-yii-yii.......  go figure!

Subject: InFO 09015 , Safety Concerns of Lancair Amateur-Built Experimental Airplanes

InFO 09015, Safety Concerns of Lancair Amateur-Built Experimental Airplanes, is for all air operators.

To alert owners/operators and pilots about a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) operational safety concern regarding the Lancair amateur-built airplanes operating under an experimental airworthiness certificate.

An InFO contains valuable information for operators that should help them meet certain administrative, regulatory, or operational requirements with relatively low urgency or impact on safety.

This InFO will be posted at the following FAA public Web site soon:
