How do you keep from going beyond the described condition (black smoke, 43 in and 54 gph)?\

                The first time this happened at 50 ft AGL….the action can be best described as a spring loaded cat pulling back on the throttle and mixture.  Fortunately this worked or we would be in need of another airplane.

Do you suppose something with the prop governor is contributing to your problem?

The engine RPM is very stable.

You also mentioned that you did some wing work.  Did your tank vents become obstructed in the process?
