No fear. I'm not flying a
'Lancair"... I'm flying an O'Neill, and this O'Neill model is less than 49%
Lancair... by law. As I'm the manufacturer and major designer, who better
to set the gross weight?
The FAA is not interested in
the design, and hardly intereted in the structure, as they have NO TECHNICAL
INFO on this fourth O'Neill, except what I giv e them. So it is our
responsibilioty to research, doublecheck, test, improve, and be careful.
The FAA, it seems to me, just wants to keep track of what we are free to say
we're doing, so they can handle the heat when we screw up.

I once asked our local FSDO about how to go about upping my official
gross weight. The reply was to note the change in the aircraft log and
go test it. I was rather surprised by the answer. I'm sure every
FSDO will have a different view, but it is certainly worth asking if you wish
to up your limit.
