Brian, I will put my  2 Cents in here also so if your question sparked the interest of others.  Call the FAA registration department, tell them your issue and they will guide you through the process of changing the registration and the N-number.    I advise you to do this prior to your need for a DAR Inspection.  Paperwork must be in order to get through the DAR.

 

If it is registered now just keep it registered and change the N-number prior to DAR.  This is not a problem merely a bother.
