Dan,
I had the pleasure of replacing this after the first 50 hours of flying on my Legacy. Even though the engine had to come off, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We first removed the bolts holding the starter on, and then removed the 4 bolts holding the engine. With the engine swinging form the hoist, we were able to remove the starter without taking the engine completely off. Actually only took an hour or so.

Has anyone ever replaced a starter adapter drive on a TSIO550? (this has the turbo scavenger pump on the back of it)
I currently have the problem of the starter motor running but the prop not turning past a compression stroke. I am told that the whole assembly has to come off the back of the engine and the shaft and spring replaced or rebuilt. The problem I have on the IV is the distance from the back of the shaft to the firewall is only 2 or 3 inches. I don't think this is enough room to slide the assembly out. Will the engine have to be moved forward to remove this assembly?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
