I always holler loudly as the fastest
Lancair passes the finish line. I’ve attended the Reno air races for the
last 25 years and have watched as the factory machines finished 1st for
those first few years of the sport class and then Daryl Greenamyer picking up
the reins to impress everyone with his Legacy. We even went when there was no noise
at all in 2001, drove from Houston, 2,000 miles in 29 hours. The law was
looking up.
My friend Bob (veteran that remembers how
some of these machines looked in action) also attends, buys at least 5 season
tickets. This year he can not go as he’s just completed radiation
treatment for a dread disease and wants to sell his portion.
He has 2 season tickets to sell ($200 for
2, 5 day sets), discounted, of course, off the already discounted season ticket
price of $110 each. Day to day prices are $133 for the 5 day set as you know, so
you save a few bucks. The seats are in Section F, row 20 which is just a few
seats from finish line so you really get to see who crosses first. These seats
are 3 seats in from the isle, so very little hassle getting in and out. Friendly
folks all around, most have been buying these seats many years. Harv
Christensen even has his name engraved on his seat … well the bench …
he’s just in front of us and sometimes brings home grown fruit to share.
Sometimes we just have to watch him eat it.
We can talk Lancair as I’m giving my
best to finish a 320 frame, being in the dread fill and sand phase.
I’ll also go down to the pits to
visit the factory folks, drool at the new machinery, talk to the guys that
really know Lancairs. I know some of you also hang around there. Hope to see
you there
