Subject: Re: [LML] Re: Training
. . . I train with a local instructor who is a a good stick and rudder
guy, good instrument instructor, but has never been in a Lancair before
he flew with me. . .
We all need two kinds of training and they do not need to be by the same
instructor. Exploring or stretching the flight envelope of a Lancair
requires tutelage by a very experienced Lancair pilot, one who could
teach what the aircraft can and cannot do. The other area needing
training is IFR work. In this case your objective is to fly by the
numbers, in the middle of the road as it were. For this you need an
instructor who is more a bus driver than a high performance expert. So
long as he knows the plan's instrumentation he should be fine - probably
closer to your home base and cheaper.
I have flown with some of the HPAT pilots and I believe that they can
handle both aspects, but yes they charge more than my local CFII. There
are other pilots in the Lancair community who could do the same. I put
one on my insurance policy (AIG charged me ZIP for that) and fly with
him whenever I can. But if my interest is instrument currency, the local
OFP that I have used for years wrings me out and sharpens my skills, and
at $35/hr.
