I have been reading the archives about blow-by and oil loses through the oil
breather tube and I have a few questions.  I have been having excessive oil
on the belly since I have been flying my Legacy which has 110 hours on it.
When I returned from Oshkosh this year I had my worst experience.  As
background I have always climbed extremely conservative with my Legacy with
a target climb rate of 500 fpm.  After each flight I would usually have
about 5.5 quarts of oil left in the sump.  I usually start with 6.5-7
quarts.  On previous flights my oil pressure has always been in the green
and has generally been between 50 and 60 psi.

It is my understanding (maybe incorrect understanding) that the oil is
atomized as the crankshaft rotates and slaps the oil in the sump. This oil
is then sucked out of the engine if there is a siphoning effect at the end
of the breather tube.  (tutorials/opinions on this subject welcomed)

Ok, here's my concern.  Upon leaving Oshkosh I climbed out with a 1000 fpm
climb.  Upon reaching 9000 feet my oil pressure topped out at 34 psi.  I
kept a watchful eye on the pressure and decided to abort my destination of
M33 and landed in Champagne, IL when my pressure oscillated between 29 and
30 psi.  After landing I only had 3 quarts of oil in the sump.  I added 3
quarts which got me to 6 quarts.  I started the engine and pressure was back
in the green and remained at 60 psi for the balance of the trip.

Since OSH I have cut an anti-siphon   hole in the breather tube about 6
inches from the bottom with the results being the same as before: if not
worse.  My Compression in the cylinders is between 68-70 psi.

I purchased an AirWolf air/oil separator but have not received it yet.  I
will install it immediately after receipt.

Has anybody had experiences like my having blown out that much oil and only
having 3 quarts remaining? Is this a symptom of greater engine issues?
Should I be concerned about other engine issues?

If I were to bet $100 in Vegas I would say the issue is all coming out of
the breather tube.  If I'm to bet my life, I'd hold the bet and seek more
info.  I am seeking more info and am soliciting opinions.  Hope this is not
 rehash.

 Best regards,
