What a great benifit it is to have access to other builders to discuss
new ideas and solutions while building the Lancair kits. I monitor the
"List" each day looking for technical questions regarding the Eagle 540
engine.
When I saw the venomous critique of the Eagle 540 I wondered whether the
writer (Carlson) was describing the same engine. Simply defined, the
Eagle 540 engine is a 540 CID 500 hp V-8, inline 2 valve per cylinder,
with shaft rocker arm assemblies. It's tuned induction features equal
length equal spaced intake ports which open to a common plenum beneath
the port runners. The lower end bearings are larger much larger than a
454 or 502 BB Chevrolet as are the connecting rods and wrist pins. The
bore is 4.500" and the stroke is 4.250". American Engine owns its own
casting patterns, forging dies and tooling to generate this "original
design" engine. Block, heads, crankshaft, connecting rods, induction
manifold, exhaust manifolds are not interchangeable with Ford, Chevrolet
or Chrysler. Block and heads are aluminum, induction, rockerbox covers,
sump, and PSRU are cast magnesium. The firing order is entirely
different than the Chevrolet.
Testing was first done using a DTS dynomometer and further testing was
done in our computer enhanced test cell with PSRU, propeller, and all
systems fully funtional. Accompanying this was structural materials
properties analysis. Extensive flight testing is scheduled wihin the
month now that pre-production first phase ground testing has been
completed.
The airframe integration package designed by former Boeing engineer
Curtis Longo allows for increased useful load and stability in flight
improvements.
This is not to be considered a sales pitch or an endorsement of the
Eagle 540 engine, but rather a technical description to correct any
misconceptions and other erroneous data submitted to this forum.
