I think the WORST time to touch the filler nozzle to the filler opening is just after you've opened it! That is when you have a high static build up (presumably from flying) AND you have the maximum amount of fuel vapor (the explosive state) due to the agitation of moving the plane. Once the charge is dissipated (best done by establishing a connection to ground AWAY any fuel vapors), then its good to keep electrical contact (via a nozzle or grounding wire) to prevent the static buildup that occurs during fuel transfer. After this thread, I'm thinking about connecting my vent lines and caps to my wing tie-downs (recessed) and using them as the spot to connect the grounding wire. Any thoughts? Another question: This thread is assuming that the nozzle tip is a good source for balancing the charge between aircraft and ground. Is this correct? Is the fuel in the line a conductor? Is there a hidden wire connection between nozzle and the pumping apparatus? Also, someone asked why this isn't a problem for cars. Seemed like a good question and I don't recall seeing an answer for this. I heard that toll takers of old used to get quite a jolt from vehicles. Well, no one will ever accuse the LML of cursory coverage of an issue :) Ed McCauley Lancair IVP -23.68% Milford, NJ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> LML website: http://www.olsusa.com/Users/Mkaye/maillist.html Builders' Bookstore: http://www.buildersbooks.com/lancair Please send your photos and drawings to marvkaye@olsusa.com. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
