I don't think the Velocity pilot's decision to go around resulted from a main gear wheel leaving the pavement. Eyewitness accounts suggest he misjudged pattern spacing and was attempting a go around to avoid hitting other aircraft on the runway.
Other accounts say there were many aircraft parked between the runway and taxiway. Perhaps the Velocity pilot first thought about swerving off the runway, then, realizing there was no room there because of all the parked aircraft, attempted a go around.
Of course, we all are speculating...
A local news outlet reported another eyewitness attending the fly in recorded the event with a some type of video device. That recording is apparently now in the hands of the NTSB. The prelim should shed more light on what exactly happened.
