Most nose gear struts contain a self centering function such that when the
weight is taken off the gear, the wheel is centered to make sure that the nose
wheel is straight when it goes into the well. You would not be able to
test the damping effect whilst on jacks because the the nose gear would be
extended, centered and locked there.

on the jacks. It only requires that you twist the gear left and right
then see if it self centers. Or, am I missing something
