Last weekend I flew for 2 hours from Detroit to Newport News, Va and 4 hours back.
Going down the temp was -14°C at 11,500 ft. My oil temp looked a little low at 170°F. I closed the oil cooler air door and the oil temp went down to 150°F. I opened the air door back up, so that air was flowing through the oil cooler and the oil temp went right back up to 170°F. Same thing on the return trip. Only God knows why this happened.
In the summer with temps in the 60's, the oil temp will be 180°F with the air door open and 220°F with the air door closed.
I have no idea why it works differently in the winter?
