Is this plane painted?  If nothing works at getting it open through the
handle hole, it seems a small surgically placed hole in the door skin would
allow arthroscopic access to the mechanism itself.  The hole could then be
pretty easily patched.

 

Also have you thought about removing the hinges?  Can you get at (or drill)
the hinge bolts?
