The latest series of questions about tapping into fuel lines and past
questions about fitting indicate that some information on this subject may
be useful.
In general all fittings used on Lancairs are "SAE 37deg. /JIC"(all flare
fittings), "NPTF/NPT" pipe (tapered pipe threads that seal by thread
interference) and "SAE O RING" (straight threads that use an "O" ring to
seal).
NPTF/NPT fittings sizes are stated in terms that have little to do with the
actual fitting size, i.e.
DASH/SIZE THRD OD THRDS/INCH
-1..1/16NPT .315" 27
-2..1/8NPT .410" 27
-4..1/4NPT .540" 18
-6..3/8NPT .680" 18
-8..1/2NPT .840" 14
-12..3/4NPT 1.05" 14
-16..1NPT 1.32" 11-1/2
"SAE O RING" is a straight thread the size of which indicates the port I.D.
(more or less).
DASH/SIZE THRDS/INCH
-2..1/8 5/16-24
-3..3/16 3/8-24
-4..1/4 7/16-20
-5..5/16 1/2-20
-6..3/8 9/16-8
-8..1/2 3/4-16
-10..5/8 7/8-14
-12..3/4 1 1/16-12
-14..7/8 1 3/16-12
-16..1 1 5/16-12
The 37 deg. JIC fittings are the same dash number and thread size as the
"SAE O RING" and size indicates the tubing O.D.
For steel Weatherhead fittings our best source is NAPA. The fittings with
a "C" as first digit in part number are forged 1 piece MS rated. Those
with a TF are 2 piece and not MS rated.
You may be able to obtain Weatherhead Catalog # 202E (dated 4/93) or a more
current edition. Another catalog is Aeroquip Industrial Connector # JA
316E. The selection from each of these may be larger or smaller depending
upon which you choose. With these catalogs you should be able to find any
fitting you need.
