You can tell if it is the exhaust by placing a hand over the
exhaust pipe end. It should change the tone or stop the noise.
You can remove the valve cover and "spike the valves"
(hit them with a rubber hammer) as it may just be
a bit of crude that will bust loose.
Also run the engine and recheck when warm.
If it comes back, it may be worth a check
with a boroscope before declaring alls well.

Mike Busch ? has written many articles in the various
aviation press about clyinders, condition inspection etc.

40/80 is a small leak. I have flown engines that
worked great, gone in for annual and had compressions
or 0/80

A TSIO may be an issue, on my Cessna a clyinder
change is a couple of hours and $300 to rebuilt the
same jug with all new valves etc.

During this years conditional inspection cylinder #5's compression
was found to be 40/80. All the other cylinders are in the mid 70's.
You can hear air escaping past what I believe to be the
exhaust port. Engine has less then 100 hour since new.
Any words of wisdom before I remove the cylinder.
