Arrival at OSH "Airventure" can be a real
adventure.
I've been in there and Sun-n Fun about 20
times. Three occasions were memorable adventures.
If you happen to go in when they are busy, you
should not be surprised to be backed up behind a lot of slow airplanes.
Lancairs can be flown safely at the speeds required for standard arrivals when
others are following the procedure.
The controllers are some of the best and they don't
like pressure and being put on the spot any more than pilots do. If I were
a controller, I would really appreciate having a runway available for an
emergency.
I think it is unreasonable for fast homebuilt
planes to expect the same priority as some of the other arrivals. Rather,
the warbird arrival should be one of many options you consider as needed.
Don't run out of options and don't try to get in
there without at least an hour's worth of extra fuel.
