Flap
Switch
I am building L-360 and currently working on a panel and flap
system. Could you please let me know the most suitable switch for flap
operation. I will place my switch on the bottom right of off avionics' stack.
I am not sure if I should use "on-off-momentary" or "momentary-off-momentary"
flap switch. Also I am considering putting this switch on the side of Infinity
stick, perhaps. Thank you in advance for your
comments.
Garry,
One can learn to use any switch or combination. The only advantage of
a "raise the flaps all the way" switch is for a technique that is used to kill
the float when landing. Of course, proper speed control reduces the float
also. The disadvantage is in a go-around and the tremendous pitching
moment the flaps create - the plane will be dramatically out of trim until the
pilot starts chasing the pitch change.
Keeping one's fingers on the momentary up switch for a few seconds on
take off, after the gear is raised, doesn't seem to be a problem to me.
Momentary switches would seem to be even more appropriate if located on the
stick and probably nice if some spare fingers can also adjust the pitch
trim at the same time that whatever remaining fingers are moving the
stick (don't tell me you might try to use the PTT trigger, too).
I have heard of stick mounted switch/wire problems so it might be useful to
consider back up switches on the panel duplicating the functions available on
the stick and a switch to allow or eliminate any flight
control functions provided on the co-pilot's stick.
