I used a thick rubber mat that worked well. My baggage area has a floor. Rather than construct a cover over the tunnel, I constructed a plywood floor that extends over the tunel and to the side walls of the fuselage. The result is a nice flat baggage compartment floor, area under the floor for wiring runs and some extra room for electronic boxes that didn't find room behind the instrument panel, and protection for the prepreg and core. The baggage floor is constructed from 5 ply 1/8" thick plywood used for hobby applications and is covered with a light carpet. Of course the floor is removable. It was a bit tricky to get the floor to fit against the fuselage side wall just right but cardboard patterns made that job relatively easy. I constructed floor pads at several places along the fuselage sides, the tunnel walls and along the seat back. Each pad has a nut bonded within.
