During each 1/4 revolution of the crankshaft there is one cylinder working at an optimum push angle. (4 stroke, 8 cyls, 90 degree V). This results in a great design for producing torque efficiently. Engines with more than 8 cylinders can do this too but with increased friction, complexity and cost. The stresses in the crankcase produced by all this torque does require a somewhat heavier structure than an opposed engine. Cooling it is a whole new issue.
